Using Electronic Funds to Avoid Check Processing Delays for Payment of Income Taxes

Delays by the IRS and State Revenue Departments in processing checks from taxpayers for the payment of income taxes is increasing.  Delays in the processing of checks can cause automated tax notices requesting payment of the unpaid income tax with interest and penalties. Unprocessed checks can also be lost by the IRS or state agency.

Paying your income taxes by electronic funds withdrawal can eliminate the problem of having an unprocessed or lost check for the payment of income taxes.

The benefits of Electronic Payment include:

  • Individuals and business can utilize electronic funds withdrawal.
  • There are no fees for electronic funds withdrawal for the payment of income taxes.
  • Making an electronic payment eliminates the need to mail a payment voucher and check. It also eliminates the uncertainty of when the check will be processed.
  • The funds are withdrawn by the IRS or state from the financial institution on the date designated for electronic withdrawal.
  • Payment information is only used for the tax payment authorized.
