New Jersey has recently made major upgrades to its tax filing system, specifically affecting Sales and Use Tax, by launching a new online portal called the NJ Tax Portal. 

Key Changes and Information:

  • New NJ Tax Portal: This is a multi-phased modernization of the tax filing system, designed to make filing and payment easier.
  • Transition and Extension:
    • The old online system was temporarily unavailable for filings starting April 26, 2025.
    • The new portal became fully operational on May 14, 2025.
    • Phase 1 of this upgrade included Sales and Use Tax.
    • All returns and payments due in May 2025 related to Phase 1 received a 30-day extension, with no penalties or interest during this period.
  • Benefits of the NJ Tax Portal:
    • Provides easier filing and faster access to account information for taxpayers and preparers.
    • Allows taxpayers more control over their accounts and enhanced assistance with tax account information.
    • Allows for online filing and payment of Sales and Use Tax and other covered taxes.
    • Ability to view account history and store information for future filings.
  • Discontinued System: The old telephone-based filing system for sales tax has been permanently discontinued.
  • Setting up an Account: Taxpayers and preparers can set up an account on the new portal starting May 14, 2025.
